Did anyone mention the Nixon-era Philip Roth book (heavy-handed satire) called Our Gang? Not one of Roth's better efforts, but one must smile a bit about the title.

Ninth at Aqueduct today won by Alphalfa. Needless to say, it was a spanking good victory as he stymied the competition, etc., etc.

Regarding the last picture on page 20 and the comment on not how to dress a teenage singer (with a Darla reference), one word describes it...
Disgusting. With a capital D.

Kinda weird, but here 'this...
Some of you may remember the Kazoo Kid meme from a couple years back, and if you don't, hunt down 'You On Kazoo.' It's jaw-dropping.
Anyway, watched a reaction video to that video and the two guys started talking about how the Littke Rascals would feel about Kazoo Kid. They decided the Rascals would 'kick his *ss,' "especially my boy Buckwheat." I tend to agree.

What is it with the '80s and weird, creepy @$$ "Special Friends" $#!%?
I noticed the comments on "The Kazoo Kid" YouTube video are closed. 'Erm, I wonder why?!!?

Likely due to YouTube’s new policy about kid themed videos. They want a safe environment for kid viewers. Though I’m not sure if any kid would want to watch that... it seems to be bigger with sarcastic adults.

I think they also want to protect kids who appear on videos from pervy comments.

My question was kind of facetious, but kudos to YouTube for promoting a safer environment for kids. (And in the above case, maybe for sarcastic adults too!)

Even at this late date, you can tell if someone is a good person deep down if they can correctly use the word "isthmus" in a sentence, the Rascals sense. I made one my first college pals in just that way, though I don't remember what led up to it.

Another entry: The National Examiner, a tabloid paper, recently did a 'Whatever Happened To...?' story about the Rascals.
Surprisingly enough, it was fairly competent. None of the Rascals were said to have been abducted or anything.

Had to dig this out to pass this along...
FORGOTTEN HORRORS 4: DREAMS THAT MONEY CAN BUY by Michael Price and John Wooley is one of a series of books reviewing obscure and forgotten B-movies from the past.
This specific volume contains back to back reviews of THE GAS HOUSE KIDS 'GO HOLLYWOOD' with a now-grown Alfalfa Switzer and Tommy Bond and the two CURLEY films where Roach tried to re-create the Gang. The authors don't like either one of them.
They also reprint comments Hal Roach made in the Nineties about MGM "ruining" the Gang, singling out Mickey for special abuse.
I haven't read all the FORGOTTEN HORRORS yet but I'm a big fan.

And another obscurity...
Old syndicated show from the early Sixties, FRACTURED FLICKERS, hosted by Hans Conried. They edited together bits of old silent movies and added a humorous soundtrack. They also did faux interviews, actually comedy routines with special guest celebrities. On the second show, Hans talks to the teen heart-throb Fabian, whom he seems to have mistaken for Spanky MacFarland. Later, when Fabian expresses some confusion as to who Conried is, Conried claims to have been Alfalfa's understudy. Not often you get a reference more obscure than the original films but there it is...

On an episode of syndicated Sale of the Century on December 2, 1985, the host Jim Perry asked the question "What famous gang had members named Darla, Alfalfa..." Jim Perry never completed the question, but a contestant buzzed in the moment Darla was mentioned and answered "Our Gang". Jim Perry mentioned that The Little Rascals would also be acceptable.
To the best of my knowledge, Darla was technically not involved in the Little Rascals as a gang - except for the short-lived cartoon spinoff which was cancelled over a year before this Sale episode aired. Maybe Jim Perry took the cartoon spinoff into consideration when the question was used.
Sale of the Century tended to have used World Book Encyclopedia as reference material for trivia questions as displayed in the closing credits - at least for the NBC version.
It makes sense as to why the contestant buzzed in the moment Darla was mentioned. What else would people associate the name Darla with in 1985? Nowadays, people associate that name with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Finding Nemo.
