I got to ask, the girl in the poster, is it Janet Burston? It obviously can't be Darla. Uh huh, it's Janet. Darla had left the series by this point.

That "Best Of Mickey" cover would send me running for sure! By the way, is this actually genuine? It sure appears so, to my eyes! I agree regarding the inclusion of a different short instead of "Time Out For Lessons" on "The Best Of Alfalfa" VHS Tape. "The Little Ranger" (Many peg this as the best of the MGM shorts!) would have been my pick, although "Duel Personalities" isn't bad, either. On the other hand, although "Unexpected Riches" represents Spanky's last 'Our Gang' entry, in my opinion, "Mighty Lak A Goat" would've been a far better choice on "The Best Of Spanky" Cassette. Of course, this would've meant using a different entry on "The Best Of Buckwheat" - "Tale Of A Dog" (Hey, there is MORE of Buckwheat in this short!), perhaps? Dare I ask if there's a "Best Of Janet" VHS release? CHEERS!

A few more comments regarding the MGM/UA "Best Of" 'Our Gang' Comedies: Is it just me, or does Spanky's face on the cover have a slightly odd appearance? Why Buckwheat's scared face for the cover of his "Best Of" Tape? And oh, that "This Video Is O-TAY!" slogan for THE BUCKWHEAT SEAL OF APPROVAL! I wonder whether Eugene "Porky" Lee ever considered litigation over that one? CHEERS!

Dare I ask if there's a "Best Of Janet" VHS release? CHEERS! "The Best of Mickey" was something I put together as 'procrastination work.' I didn't have a copy of "Dad For a Day" on hand at the time, so I had to search in vain for one of ymymeatemup's old avatars. Glad I found it! If MGM/UA had released this tape, it likely would have been called "The best of Robert Blake," or "The Best of Robert Blake as 'Mickey.'" A few more comments regarding the MGM/UA "Best Of" 'Our Gang' Comedies: Is it just me, or does Spanky's face on the cover have a slightly odd appearance? I wonder whether Eugene "Porky" Lee ever considered litigation over that one? CHEERS! Spanky's image is from the Roach days. It does have a more cartoonish look to it than the other two covers do. MGM/UA also released "Genreal Spanky" on VHS and LaserDisc (I must say I like the cover art). The LaserDisc version featured "Aladdin's Lantern," "The Big Premiere," and "Time Out For Lessons" as bonus shorts. The "Don't Lie" VHS featured a hodgepodge of good and bad shorts - "The Big Premiere," "Bubbling Troubles," "Clown Princes," "Farm Hands," and of course, "Don't Lie." There was also a BETA release. Finally, MGM/UA three LaserDisc set featured a mix of MGM shorts, Pathe silents, and the three PD Roach talkies. All by one of the MGM shorts had previously been released on home video. The added short? "Calling All Kids..." The silents featured some nice piano scores.

Regarding the "MGM Best of" series, were there any VHS releases with "Captain Spanky's Showboat" included? And was there ever a "Best of Darla" compilation in this series? Also, I wouldn't mind seeing the 1939 short "Captain Spanky's Showboat" someday, just to see what it's like as opposed to the totally different 1982 episode with a different spelling of the title.

As far as I know, CAPTAIN SPANKY'S SHOWBOAT (1939) has only been released on THE OUR GANG COLLECTION 5 DVD-R set by The Warner Archive, which includes all 52 MGM shorts that were released from August 1938 to April 1944. A quick Google search didn't reveal any other releases of this short. What I do know, is a small number of vintage MGM films released by Warner Home Video include an MGM 'Our Gang' short. One of my Marx Brothers double sided DVDs (ROOM SERVICE (1938)/AT THE CIRCUS (1939)) include two of these; PARTY FEVER (1938) and DOG DAZE (1939). CHEERS!

There was never a 'Best of Darla.' Just 'Spanky,' 'Alfalfa,' and 'Buckwheat.' Ah, one of those tribute videos, eh? Well, I can't speak for the bit on Wheezer, but the gent in the baseball cap at 2:10 is definitely NOT Our Gang's Harry Spear!

Well, I can't speak for the bit on Wheezer, but the gent in the baseball cap at 2:10 is definitely NOT Our Gang's Harry Spear! Actually, just seeing the young and older Harry Spear, I do see some similar features. While I certainly won't say unequivocally the man in the later photo is Harry Spear, I won't say that he definitely isn't, either! For that, I would need to see some substantial evidence (IE. The sources of those side by side photos!) either way. As for the two Robert "Wheezer" Hutchins's photos, there appears to be a very strong resemblance, and yet I'm not totally convinced, probably mainly because there's been so precious little that's surfaced of Wheezer post 1933, except for a rather lousy looking semi photo (In my opinion, that seems the most apropos descriptor!) that was published upon the news of his May 1945 passing! I rather liked the older George "Spanky" McFarland's photo, which certainly isn't the way I'm used to having seen him as an adult, what with the hint of a mustache and also appearing somewhat slimmer, yet it was unmistakably Spanky! Perhaps it's just because Kendall McComas was already near his full height when he appeared in 'Our Gang', but to me, there appeared to be very little difference in his younger and older photos! In my opinion, this is all in all, a most enjoyable tribute, with just enough mystery to make for even more interesting viewing! CHEERS!
