Spanky and Scotty... I'm reading Tommy Bond's book "Darned Right It's Butch" right now and he says that despite being portrayed as pals on the show, they actually despised one another in real life. Interesting behind the scenes stuff. Speaking of Tommy Bond, here he is in Mush and Milk... He's another favorite BTW. I love his singing performance of "Just Friends", and of course later he played the perfect bully as Butch.

Interesting behind the scenes stuff. I remember reading that part in Tommy's book (which I strongly recommend). Funny thing is, Spanky himself said that he got along well with Scotty. youtu.be/9AaT2snEcnA?t=3m31s

I enjoyed Tommy's book too but I think that quite a bit of it needs to be taken with a reasonable pinch of salt. Perhaps memories aren't so accurate after 60 years or more and perhaps actors have a deep seated need to embellish their own roles but whatever, it was entertaining enough and I dare say a great deal of it was fairly authentic.

The photo of Scooter Lowry in the top hat is probably the best one of him that I've ever seen. There are a few other especially good ones, though, most taken during his vaudeville days following his departure from The Gang.

It's also possible that Spanky felt bad for Scotty considering the way his life ended tragically at a young age and was trying to paint the best picture of him possible. Bad feelings can cool off with age and wisdom. They were just kids at the time, competing for screen time. I'm still reading and learning, so I don't really know... Okay, it's time for Froggy... I know the later episodes aren't the most popular, but I swear Froggy will always say or do something that will crack me up. What a voice... Phooey! ;D

I'm going to have to go with Froggy, as well. He gave the MGM shorts a much-needed boost. Attachments:

I don't know if this counts as a photo, but I found this drawing of Scotty Beckett, done by a Chicago art student, and was quite impressed. Oftentimes I find artists do an excellent job capturing their subject's form, but leave out some crucial element in conveying their personality. Without that flicker inside the eyes, a certain sense of personal presence, a portrait is worth little. As I see it, the student who created this drawing captured Scotty's true essence, and that, much more than flawless lines or impeccable form, is what draws me to this picture. I would guess the artist must have felt true fondness for the Scotty Beckett of his halcyon days with The Gang in order to so sensitively and astutely render him on paper. I wonder if he or she has done any other Our Gang artwork... Attachments:
