I assumed, perhaps wrongly, that it was done to avoid confusion with Billy Lee. That would make sense. A scene from "Reg'lar Fellers". L to R: Aggie Reilly (Janet Dempsey), Pinhead Duffy (Billy Lee), Jimmy Dugan (Buddy Boles), Bump Hudson (Alfalfa), Skeeter (Spike), and Puddin'Head Duffy (Malcolm Hutton). Attachments:

The second of three "Gas House Kids" movies, an obvious attempt to rip-off Mongram's East Side Kids (which around the same time, was reworked into a new series, "The Bowery Boys"). Carl Switzer and Tommy Bond were both in the cast. Carl was in all three (in the second one, he was called "Alfalfa", and in the third one, he was called "Alfie"). Also in the cast were Bennie Bartlett (who would soon portray "Butch" in the Bowery Boys series until 1956), and Rudy Wissler. I asked Rudy's son if his dad had any memories of Alfalfa. His response was that Rudy remembered Alfie as being "quite big-headed and kind of a jerk".

Billy Halop and Alfalfa in the first "Gas House Kids" movie. While it is too bad that Alfalfa's first handful of post-Our Gang films were largely B-movies where he reprised his famous role, at least he got better roles over time. The one I really feel sorry for is Billy Halop, in one of his first roles after serving in WWII. Here he was trying to get rid of his "Dead End Kids" image, only to wind up starring in a rip-off of a rip-off of the series he was trying to get away from (The East Side Kids started out as a rip-off of the Dead End Kids). A scene from "The Gas House Kids" (a very boring movie, in my opinion). L to R: Gus Schmidt (Rocco Lanzo), Mickey Papopalous (Our Gang supporting player Rex Downing), Pat Flanagan (David Reed), Tony Albertini (Billy Halop), and Sammy Levine (Alfalfa). I always loved how this group (with the exception of NYC born Billy Halop) don't even attempt to sound like New Yorkers. Attachments:

There's One Born Every Minute (1942) Alfie singing and looking devastatingly handsome alongside Elizabeth Taylor in her movie debut.

Before I let Froggy's birthday pass by I thought I would qoute someone who knew him and worked with him...
From Robert Blake (then Mickey)
"Billy 'Froggy' Laughlin was a dearly loved, sweet, gentle soul. His mother and father showered him with love, affection. All he wanted in this life was that Cushman motor scooter. Two weeks after he got it he was dead and you might say by his own hand because what he did in that cross section caused his death"
This is a quote from Robert Blake who knew him when they were both children, and probably knows what really happened.
The truth isn't always pretty.

And Froggy was the one that I was particularly interested in hearing about.

I've just started his book and I swear I'm in stitches. He has a very straight forward way of telling things. Of course he has a long career to talk about, but he has some Rascal stories to tell, especially about Alfie. He was there, and knows the truth.
Unlike all of us...He was there and knew these people firsthand. He seems like a straight forward type of guy.
