Got a semi-connection...
Reportedly, in at least one VERY early silent based on the L. Frank Baum Oz stories --No, not the one with Oliver Hardy as the Tin Woodsman-- the role of the Cowardly Lion was played by one 'Al Roach,' who was either mis-billed or changed his name to Hal...

That was during Roach's early career (he initially came to Hollywood as an actor, rather than a producer/director/writer. He lost interest in acting pretty quickly.

Another oddball cameo...
Next time you watch the first ADDAMS FAMILY film, take a close look at the older African American gent in the band playing bass. That's Eugene 'Pineapple' Jackson.

And another MST3K reference...
In the movie JUNGLE GODDESS, a man talks about the farm he's going to buy where he intends to have alfalfa. Naturally, the bots chime in, "And Darla, and Porky, and Buckwheat..."

In response to "Jungle Goddess," the Rascals reference appears towards the end of the movie (1:31:13 or so to be more precise). Nice to hear Farina get a mention.

Just saw Otto Preminger's 'notoriously bad' 60's satire SKIDOO. The opening scene finds Tony and Flo Banks (Jackie Gleason and Carol Channing) and their friend Harry (Arnold Stang) flipping through the TV channels. One of the commercials they briefly pass is a smoking ad featuring two kids and a dog (with a circle around his eye). The children and their pooch are all (I kid you not) smoking a cigarette. Anyhow, I guess the dog is a reference to Pete the Pup?
Towards the end of the film, Jackie Gleason and prison cellmate Austin Pendleton make their escape from jail with a makeshift hot air balloon. It almost feels like a contraption adult versions of the Our Gang kids would have put together. You can see the takeoff at the end of the trailer (around the 2:00 mark).
And no, this movie isn't as weird as the trailer makes it out to be. It's far stranger.

Have heard a lot about SKIDOO but have never seen it, perhaps unfortunately. (I did see SEXTETTE and survived that, though.)
One notable bit of weirdness that can be detected in the trailer: The end credits are SUNG, in their entirety.

Hold on.. I just noticed a bit of a goof in the Jack Benny Program with Darla Hood that no one mentioned yet.. Darla does mention " Farina" except in the year that Darla was born, Farina was getting pulled out of Our Gang. She either mentioned him because he's popular amongst the fans, or she just has a really bad memory!

Ah, yes - "Skidoo" - one of the worst "must-have" movies in my DVD collection. There's two reasons why I just had to have it: 1. Being a Marx Brothers fan, I wanted to include Groucho's last movie in my collection - especially since he plays a character named "God." 2. Somebody in my family had cut out a little article from the newspaper about this film because they had shot part of it at the South San Francisco City Hall. "South City," as the locals call it, is where I grew up. The only other South City landmark that ever shows up in films, as far as I've noticed, is Sign Hill, which is often visible in the background in films shot at the SF Airport.

It's rather sad seeing old favorites like Groucho stuck in SKIDOO. Groucho is clearly reading off of cue cards in his scenes (it's most noticable when Alexandra Hay visits "God"'s office). During production, Director Otto Preminger reportedly bullied poor Groucho until Jackie Gleason stepped in and physically threatened Preminger. Gleason and Channing were both reportedly unhappy during filming. This is interesting, considering Channing is about the only person in the movie who looks like she's trying (that theme song she sings is catchier than it should be). Austin Pendleton (probably better remembered today for "My Cousin Vinny" and the first Muppet movie) has some interesting stories about the film. homeprojectionist.com/2013/04/29/a-conversation-with-actor-austin-pendleton-premingers-68-skidoo-still-weird-still-wonderful/I'd imagine there are further production details in Otto Preminger's biography. Getting back on topic, did you know Stymie was the star of his own UK comic series for about a decade? 2.bp.blogspot.com/_kPAZrfnR3_o/Sgl1XMMSfiI/AAAAAAAAAB8/2sQXHRZUGcc/s1600-h/stymie_01.jpg

And a semi-sorta connection: New PBS show, ODD SQUAD, a kind of kid-sized version of X-FILES featuring kid secret agents using math to investigate strange happenings.
Does this cast member bear a resemblance to a certain cow-licked crooner?

The guys from Martin had a token white friend with an afro. His nickname? "Buckwhite." Trivia: He was played by the show's property master.
