Hi Today I was watching "The Tyra Banks Show" (hey, there was nothing else on at 4:00 pm!) and they showed a picture of little Buckwheat from "Our Gang!" They were talking about certain skin colors, and some lady was talking about very dark skin and she said, "Kind of like Buckwheat. Remember what he looked like?" And they showed a photo of Buckwheat (it was a picture from the MGM days because Froggy was standing next to him)! I know that this is random, but it made me think of this board! And, I know it's weird, but I get excited when a Rascal gets mentioned on televison, even if it's on the Tyra show. So that got me to thinking... where else has the "Our Gang" franchise or kids been mentioned in pop culture. I know that Eddie Murphy has portrayed Buckwheat on SNL, and I read a while ago that there was a "Little Rascal" reference on "Family Guy." (Just curious, but what episode of FG is that?) And there was an E! True Hollywood Story about the "curse" of "Our Gang," which usually airs around Halloween each year. Can you think of any other "Our Gang" references in television shows, etc. Those are the only ones I can think of. Anyone else got any?

There was a Simpsons episode in which Moe reveals that he was in the Our Gang as a child, and killed 'the original Alfalfa,' if I remember correctly.

In one of the late-nite T&A type comedies (like "Attack of the 60-foot Centerfold"), part of the *plot dealt with some people that were making a movie.
At a certain point of the film, we see some snippets of the movie they made. One scene involved a cannibal made up to look somewhat remiscent of "Uncle George" chasing a man with the voiceover repeating "Yum-Yum! Eat 'em up!"
*Yes, there was one. Unfortunately, though, I don't recall exactly what movie it was.

Thanks for the list, RJH. I got this from wikipedia:
Darla Hood is mentioned in the song "Purple Stain" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers with the lines: Knock on wood we all stay good 'Cause we all live in Hollywood With Dracula and Darla Hood Unspoken words were understood
A short sound clip of Darla, Spanky and Alfalfa from an episode of Our Gang can be heard at the beginning of the REO Speedwagon song "Tough Guys", from the album Hi Infidelity.

There is a scene in the Sopranos where Christopher is shooting up while watching "Bear Shooters".
Not that I blame him.

Surprised nobody has mentioned the "Cheers" episode where Spanky came into the bar and Cliff talked to him about the Rascals, not knowing that he was the real Spanky McFarland.

I know this is a little random to be bumping this back up again, but I was watching "Two and Half Men" the other day and Charlie Sheen's character kept referring to his nephew's new friend as "Alfalfa." It made me think of this topic!

In the movie Tommy Boy, Chris Farley asked David Spade who was his favorite Little Rascal - Alfalfa or Spanky?

On "The Gilmore Girls" Lauren Graham says "It might choke Artie, but it ain't gonna choke Stymie." - a line from "The Pooch"

Also, in the early 1980s, there were a series of commercials for Jello Pudding Pops that featured "The Little Rascals". Of course, they were new kids playing the classic gang, and in color.
Perhaps this is where the Bill Cosby rumor was started (the one that he bought the rights to the series).

Perhaps this is where the Bill Cosby rumor was started (the one that he bought the rights to the series). According to Jerry Tucker, the rumor apparently began when Cosby was on a talk show stating that if he could buy the rights to the series, he would.
