This is indeed, most priceless Foreign Language footage of 'Our Gang'! I'm thinking the Dark Haired Girl with Ringlets was probably French (I presume she played Dorothy DeBorba's part!), as she appeared to speak it without any difficulty, while Wheezer of course, struggled a bit, though I thought he did well, under the circumstances! It would be great if more Foreign Language versions (Audio AND Visual) turned up of THE FIRST SEVEN YEARS; WHEN THE WIND BLOWS; BEAR SHOOTERS and TEACHER'S PET! As a side note, I also wonder whether any of the very early 1930 -31 shorts from "The Boyfriends" series also had Foreign Language versions produced? Thank you very much for kindly sharing this! CHEERS!

CHEERS! Yes, indeed! I'm glad that so many of the Laurel and Hardy prints have survived! I believe three of Charley Chase's foreign prints are out there. Like L&H, many of his films were expanded to a few extra reels for other markets. Harry Langdon also made a few foreign language films during his breif stay at Roach, but I don't know if any of them have survived. Dorothy wasn't in the Gang yet. The dark haired girl was named Beverly Parrish, and she does appear in the English language version of "A Tough Winter," but with no lines. My guess is that Mary Ann wasn't as successful with remembering her non-English lines as the crew had hoped. But they certainly couldn't just kick Mary Ann out of the short. So they simply gave some of her lines to Beverly. Sadly, Beverly died only about a week or two after production on this short wrapped. To the best of my knowledge, there never was a foreign-language Boy Friends short filmed. Roach attempted to sell a Spanish version of "Doctor's Orders" with Spanish inter-title cards spliced in between dialogue scenes of the film, but it was rejected by MGM. The same things happened with "Teacher's Pet," which was also only filmed in English. If I'm not mistaken, Roach tried combining "Teacher's Pet" and "School's Out" as a feature for the foreign markets.

She did join just a bit after, in the very next short PUPS IS PUPS, in fact! That is so profoundly sad about Beverly Parrish dying so soon after shooting A TOUGH WINTER! From what little I could dig up online, her death was sudden (An Auto Accident, perhaps?), and I think the way she appears in the Film (Her only appearance in one, apparently!) tends to support that, though sudden severe illness wasn't out of the question! I read about the Spanish version of DOCTOR'S ORDERS on Dave Lord Heath's "Another Nice Mess" website right after my previous post. That seems a bit odd to me that Hal Roach used Foreign Intertitles instead of the then usual Phonetic speaking, though I suppose time and expense might have forced his hand, in this case! It's not a surprise to me that MGM rejected that print, as even the description leaves the impression of a substandard finished product. CHEERS! Tony

Does anybody know if Leon Janney spoke any other languages? That might explain his presence in "Bear Shooters."

Does anybody know if Leon Janney spoke any other languages? That might explain his presence in "Bear Shooters." Even just looking up Leon Janney's imdb page reveals that he did a lot of voice over work, and that he perfected more than 20 different accents and dialects. Even his place of residence at the time of his passing (Guadalajara, Mexico) from cancer in 1980, to me tends to be indicative that he was likely fluent in Spanish near the end of his life, at least! CHEERS!

About Beverly Parrish, there's an interesting tidbit about her on a website dedicated to her sister, actress Helen Parrish, who didn't have a very long life herself, passing away at just 35 years of age! Beverly was reported as having had Diabetes, which for me, certainly raises possibilities regarding causes of her sudden passing! www.helenparrish.com/biography.htmlCHEERS!

CHEERS! Interesting! "Bear Shooters" was definitely filmed in Spanish, and I believe French. Given that Roach was trying to turn Jackie Cooper into a star around this point, it always surprised me that he took a backseat for a kid who was clearly too old for the Gang and would never appear in the series again. The only other reason I can think of for Janney showing up in this one OG short is that Roach owed his agent a favor. The foreign language theory seems more plausible to me.

Actually, since Jackie took no such back seat in the prior English versions of THE FIRST SEVEN YEARS and WHEN THE WIND BLOWS, both of which had Foreign Language versions Filmed, I wonder whether Leon Janney's take over for BEAR SHOOTERS was more due to a time scheduling issue of some sort? A quick check shows that the English Language A TOUGH WINTER was issued after BEAR SHOOTERS. A good question that our friend Dave Lord Heath could answer having seen TEMPS D'HIVER in its entirety, is whether Jackie Cooper had much dialogue in the French version of the former? CHEERS!

Jackie didn't have much dialogue in the English version of "A Tough Winter." Since "The First Seven Years" was the Gang's first foreign language shoot, perhaps it's where the staff saw issues that they were able to correct in later international shoots. "When the Wind Blows" isn't very dialogue-heavy. What I really want to know is how Stepin Fetchit handled having to do his shtick in another language. (Dave really saw all of French "A Tough Winter" )

(Dave really saw all of French "A Tough Winter" ) According to a post of Beverly Parrish Dave did on Facebook , yes he did see the French Language version! I recall him posting about it somewhere in his "Another Nice Forum" as well, though I'm not quite sure just where, at the moment! To further support your theory about Jackie Cooper's possible phonetic Language issues (And perhaps of other HR Stars, as well?), HRS was veering toward resorting to Intertitles with 'Our Gang' (TEACHER'S PET) and "The Boyfriends" (The MGM rejected Spanish Intertitled DOCTOR'S ORDERS) the latter of which was a brand new Hal Roach series. As a side note, I recall reading somewhere that Anita Garvin couldn't handle the phonetics either, and ended up Lip Synching another actress (For one or both Foreign versions of BE BIG!), who spoke out of Camera range. If there isn't an entire book dedicated to the making of the Hal Roach Phonetically spoken Foreign Language Films, in my opinion, there should be! I think this would be most fascinating! CHEERS!
