NOISY NOISES (1929) Things I like: The Sound Effects. I already liked this episode quite a lot before I ever heard the original soundtrack, but it's even better with it. This wasn't the first (silent) Our Gang with sound, but it seems to be the first to really take full advantage of the new technology - that is, until the studio actually started making talkies. The film is liberally peppered with sound effects, from hammer hits as Wheezer hunts for bugs, to Rupert's laughter, to Pete whinnying like a horse as the monkey rides him. The most notable use of sound, though, accompanies the cacophonous musical moments. In addition to the Gang's assortment of noise makers, we're treated to three different people rehearsing in the building: first a man practicing his bass fiddle, then a man practicing his tuba, and most notably of all, a woman being given a voice lesson. It's also worth mentioning that, while not perfect, the sound effects are generally well-synched with the action. Rupert. Normally, I can't tolerate crying babies in film comedies, but somehow I have no problem at all with Rupert. Perhaps the biggest reason for this is the fact that it's a silent film, and the soundtrack mercifully omits any sounds of crying. He also seems to, at least at times, be crying simply to make Joe miserable. I also find it hard not to like any toddler that gets as much enjoyment out of carreening recklessly down the road in a baby carriage as this kid does. The Trip To The Dentist. I love the way the kids skip down the sidewalk and do cartwheels while gleefully following Joe to the dentist. Things I don't like: Pretty Much Nothing. I really can't think of a single thing to mention here. Even without the accompanying disc, this gag-heavy short is loads of fun. Grade: A So the soundtrack on the German release is original? There have been discussions in the past where some people were skeptical.

This is probably my favorite short from the silent era, and one of my favorites overall, so I'm pretty excited about sharing this one. Not a lot of editing needed to be done, as the only print that I'm aware of existing already includes most of the original film. As usual for the Pathe's, I've included the wonderful Beau Hunks soundtrack. I've decided to discontinue the use of the sepia tone and I've converted all of my completed edits back to the original black and white. I've also redone the Beau Hunks soundtracks for Fire Fighters and Mary, Queen of Tots to match the action better. I may re-upload those at a later time. Enjoy! www.youtube.com/watch?v=sezZx81A7Hc

Wow! While I don't actively participate in this thread, I do read over the reviews. I was particularly interested in what others thought of "Choo-Choo!". I was totally surprised to see the somewhat negative reviews. I always thought this one was one of the very best of the talkies. Don't get me wrong. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, of which I respect here. I just didn't realize that, across the board, this one wasn't considered one of the greats. My thoughts exactly.

Two more silents are uploaded on my channel in the best quality I can get. B&R Inc. includes the original soundtrack, and TBM has the Beau Hunks music. Hope you'll enjoy. B&R Inc.- youtu.be/V0p9GV_zFCYTBM- youtu.be/dZDdJWlCixA

Remakes of this series are always so exaggerated. It makes it hard to enjoy.

This one is a gem. For a long time, the only copy that I had of about a quarter of this short was the one on the CD-ROM with very low resolution and fewer frames per second. Why hasn't this particular print ever showed up anywhere else?? Thanks to the recent Mischief Makers DVD, I could leave out most of that CD-ROM footage. Having used three different sources (MM, Scallawags, and the CD) almost all of the short is together here at www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_-E4q-4k1Q . This is still only missing a few intertitles and maybe a very small amount of footage. The Beau Hunks soundtrack is included. In case any of you are wondering why I decided to give the shorts a sepia "tint", it's because some of the shorts look a bit dark in the transfer and after given a sepia tone (it's called "classical" on the application that I use to edit videos) it makes the video look a little bit brighter and easier to see. Imagine those darker scenes of Young Sherlocks in black and white. And because I wanted the shorts to look as consistent as possible for my own "restored" collection, I'm giving all of my silents this tone. Hope you guys enjoy this short!

Crazy House, along with its original soundtrack, is here - www.youtube.com/watch?v=UII4553UITo I don't have the original intertitles, so I kept the recreated ones from the German set but removed the German subtitles at the bottom by copying/pasting the background over the subtitles, which isn't very noticeable to me. And one of my favorites- I believe the entire Fire Fighters short is all together here- www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9hr8b8SvOY The Beau Hunks music track is provided.

No problem. :-) This is from the German DVDs, and their new intertitles with the distracting subtitles were replaced using the originals from the common print. The soundtrack was borrowed from Laurel and Hardy's Double Whoopee on YouTube. Is this originally for Double Whoopee? I thought the short didn't come with a soundtrack.

While I'm still giving The Spanking Age a few more tweaks, I've decided on Mary, Queen of Tots as my next upload, one of my favorite Our Gang silent shorts. I've used mostly the TCM broadcast, as it's the best transfer I have, and I've also slowed down the speed to what is more "realistic" as I will be doing with the other silents. The Pathe shorts will be given a Beau Hunks soundtrack. Hope you'll enjoy. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WWY8OUjvoQ

Incidentally, that cast: I finally figured it out. They've got Buckwheat, but also Stymie to counter charges of racism. They've got Darla, but also Mary Ann to counter charges of sexism. And I'm not sure why they went with a skinny Spanky but it's not important. I'll probably check it out if it's an option but I won't lose any sleep if it's not. I thought Darla was the one on the far left, but then I wondered who the girl in pigtails was. I kept thinking about Muggsy without glasses.
