On the other hand, it's also possible the Roach people would have been able to help him learn how to perform better, so he wouldn't be so grating and mechanical in later shorts.

Billy Froggy Laughlin was great in the MGM Our Gang comedies. He did get the spotlight of the later series, but i think he would of done great in the hal roach era.I wish that he would have gotten the chance. There were quite a few kids in the roach era that were far worse than froggy in my opinion. Froggy will and always will be the top in my mind as well as some others like Jackie Condon, Alfalfa, Darla, Wheezer, Stymie

I would have to say that Alfalfa was my least favorite. Not that he wasn't a good actor. It's just that I read up on too many of the things he used to do to the other cast members. From what I understand, he was quite a troublemaker.

As a kid, I never liked Darla. I didn't like the way she'd pit the boys against one another.

Of course, Darla wasn't the only girl to so play the boys against each other, though she may be the one most prominently remembered today. I always liked Darla well enough, but Dorothy DeBorba was my favorite of the girls, mostly on the merits of her humorous dialogue with Norman Chaney. A least favorite Gangster? I've never put much thought into it.

I never really thought about it when I was younger, but Darla WAS pretty manipulative, whether she meant to be or not.

My least favorite rascal would have to be Waldo (Darwood Kay) because unlike Jerry Tucker, he was not a totally unlikeable rich kid, and therefor not such a great "villian."

Beyond any doubt Janet Burston was the absolute pits, a Shirley Temple wannabe with no talent and no redeeming qualities. She effectively hammered the last nail into the Our Gang coffin.

I disliked both of the Kibrick brothers, not just their characters but the boys themselves, as I've seen them in other movies and they were still just as unlikable. Janet was a bore, with 'zero charisma' as Elliott from E.T. would have said. Froggy became a main character, as did Janet, by default because the other main characters had left and they were the last rats on board a sinking ship. Mickey Gubitosi was a soppy little cry baby but that wasn't his fault, he was simply playing a role that was written that way. I didn't like Breezy or Shirley Jean because they simply didn't belong in Our Gang, they stood out rather too jarringly from the rest of the kids. Like Wally Albright and Bouncy they were casting experiments which plainly just didn't work. I wasn't keen on Jackie Cooper either because, as others have said in this thread, he was very over rated. Jackie played his part well enough but it was a part that was pretty bland and one which lacked any memorable or outstanding qualities. Darla and Spanky were both seriously over rated, the older they both got the less they did that was amusing, 'cute' or interesting. I rather liked John "Uh-Huh" Collum though and his 'Isthmus be my lucky day' line was an absolute classic.
