Jerry that rich spoiled kid with the fire engine.
I didn't care for any of the MGM kids either.

I agree, Jerry was a brat. Never really cared for any of the MGM kids either.

The big brother in "Bear Shooters." horrible, hammy overacting. I'm glad he was in only one short.

I agree that Jerry in "Hi Neighbor" wasn't very likable, but I'm not sure if he was suppose to be. He was the antagonist, mind you. I'd say if you don't like his character, than the good Mr. Tucker did his job very well...

The big brother in "Bear Shooters." horrible, hammy overacting. I'm glad he was in only one short. That was Leon Janney who went on to have a somewhat prolific role as a character actor (mainly on television) in his later years. Yeah, he was sort of hammy, and also way too old to be an Our Gang kid. I always wondered why Hal Roach even hired him in the first place.

Leon Janney, huh? I always wondered who that kid was. I agree, he certainly wasn't my favorite either. His whining was annoying. And I wondered why he was hanging out with eight year olds when he looked about thirteen.

At least Leon was a one-off. (Although there are enough copies of Bear Shooters on the planet for him to be remembered for the rest of eternity).
The Roach-era character I never got at all was Uh-huh. His one-liner - if that's even what you could call it - wasn't funny the first time and it never got any funnier. I've never seen the 1994 movie, but I can't fathom why the filmmakers chose to resurrect that particular character. Heck, I'd have gone with a Turkey Egg or a Bonedust before him. They weren't necessarily any less memorable and they had cooler names.

I'd say if you don't like his character, than the good Mr. Tucker did his job very well... Thinking about it that way, I guess you're right. He did a very nice job of making me not like him. My favorite part was where he makes Jane get on his shoulders to spy on the gang, only to have Wally and Tommy tear his shorts off with the drill. "Ahhhh! My PANTS! Ahhhh!!!"

Yeah, Jerry was meant to be the "bad guy" so it's not such a bad thing that his character isn't well-liked. Like booklover said, Mr. Tucker was just doing his job... although he did it very well!
As far as protaginists go, I never really liked Mickey (silent era Mickey) that well. I don't know why. He kinda scared me when I was little, so maybe that has something to do with it...
And I also agree with the Uh-Huh thing... I don't know why he was "brought back" for the 1994 remake. He never really had a huge role in the original shorts (none that I've seen anyway) so I don't know why they thought he was popular enough to recreate.

The Roach-era character I never got at all was Uh-huh. When your dad is the boss's casting director, you don't need a lot of talent or personality.

I've seen Jerry Tucker in interviews and from what I can tell he seems like a very nice guy, unlike his character in "Hi-Neighbor!" (which was actually his favorite short) and "Sprucin Up".
As for Uh-Huh in the 90's movie, he was probably a favorite of the writers and/or director. But yeah, it did seem pointless to bring him back anyway.
Speaking of that movie, I heard a rumor about it, and I was wondering if anybody could confirm it. As we know, Spanky left us a year before the movie was released. But I remember hearing somewhere that before he died, he wanted to boycott this movie.

I don't know about Spanky, but just a few weeks before he died, Mel 'Gary' Jasgur had a comment about the movie. Unfortunately, I don't have a subscription to get the article to see what his comment was.

Unfortunately, I don't have a subscription to get the article to see what his comment was. Not sure which article you are trying to access, but here is an interesting LA Times article (3 pages) from August of 1994 which has commentary from several of the old Gangsters, including Mel. Seems a few of them (although not Jasgur) were quite miffed about not being included in the project. articles.latimes.com/1994-08-06/entertainment/ca-24243_1_director-penelope-spheeris
