I've got two versions of the movie on DVD. One was made for TV in 1985 and features Annette O'Toole, Julian Coutts and Julie Beaulieu. The other version is from 2006 and stars Josh Hutcherson and Anna Sophia Robb. The earlier version is probably the better of the two and closer to the book except for one excruciatingly embarrassing scene near the end.

I've seen the one with Josh Hutcherson in it and to be honest I thought that it was a bit mawkish. The posters and DVD cover created an impression it was going to be a fantasy movie with lots of CGI characters in it but the CGI turned out to be only a tiny part of the movie, it was mainly an overly sentimental drama.

Actually my DVD of it is the Russian release. I bought it because it was cheap, had a better case than the UK or US release and it's also quirky to have a copy with the title written in Cyrillic. It's exactly the same as the US and UK versions, but with the addition of removable Russian subtitles. The only real differences are that the liner notes and the DVD menus are in Russian.
