In the book by Leonard Malton and Richard Bann, they describe Tiny Troubles as the first really bad MGM short. They say that the production staff somehow expected the audience to swallow the idea that eleven-year-old Alfalfa and ten-year-old Spanky couldn't tell the difference between an infant and a midget dressed as one. Well, I think that this is the whole problem. Spanky started at the age of three, and Alfalfa started at the age of seven. These later scripts seem to be written with these same ages in mind. In my opinion, the shorts were not "bad", the acting was not "bad", it's just that the scripts were written for much younger people. The knickers that Spanky wore were cute when he was younger. The suit that Alalfa wore with the elbow-lenth sleeves and the calf-length pants was also cute when he was younger. However, when they were older, it looked like they were wearing clothes that shrunk in the wash. So now for Joy Scouts. The scoutmaster tells them that they are too young to go camping with them. HUH? Obviously, Spanky and Alfalfa are just as old as the rest of the scouts. So I think this is the problem - the way the scripts were written. Not bad acting - it's difficult for someone eleven to play someone seven!

Yeah, I guess the thought that the MGM rascals were "bad" is an opinion not a fact. And just cause Leonard Maltin thinks it doesn't mean it's true. I see your point.

Some people never heard of suspension of belief. If MGM could have Judy Garland playing a little girl in The Wizard Of Oz at 16, I don't see why Alfalfa and Spanky couldn't.

I love the MGM ones just as much as the Hal Roach era! Who cares what Maltin says, i think he a pretty terrible critic anyways but then again that's just my opinion. He's bashed alot of good movies, but then again that's what he's payed for lol

You know they originally wanted Shirley Temple for the role but Fox refused it. They made The Blue Bird for her but it failed because people didn't like her playing an unhappy girl.

I'm not sure how old Dorothy was supposed to be, but it is more believable in a dream/fantasy than Spanky and Alfalfa in everyday situations. If they wanted to keep Spanky and Alfalfa, they needed to adjust the storylines and clothing. I don't think most people blame the kids for the MGM's being bad. When Mickey produced his most annoying whine, the director declared "That's perfect kid, just what we are looking for."

So, you are saying that the annoyance that most people experience is not the director's fault? It's the kids? You think Mickey came up with that "headache, down here" crap? The writers and directors had no clue how to film Our Gang comedies.

No! The fact that little Mickey being whiny is bull! He literally whines. What more evidence do you need?

Just because you say he's whiny doesn't mean I believe you!
