I'm new to this site and am fascinated by it. I have a question and haven't been able to find the answer in all the info given here. I was told that there was a "character" in the Little Rascals called "Freckles". I can find no reference to this anywhere in the site. Did this character exist and who played him? G

There was not a character officially known as "Freckles." However, I have seen vintage articles, advertisements, and memorabilia that list Mickey Daniels, Jay R. Smith, and Harry Spear as being called "Freckles." So, it appears that it was a nickname given by people who either did not know the kids' real names, or who assumed the public wouldn't know their real names.

Hi gullythumper, and welcom to the message board!
The only character that I can think of is Mickey Daniels, the former child actor who starred in the original "Our Gang" series that began in 1922. Sadly, Mickey died in 1970 at age 55.

In Jean Darling's book, she refers to Harry Spear as "Freckles". Perhaps "Freckles" was a nickname given to some of the gang, even if it was never used onscreen, much like Farina being called "Sonny" by everyone on the set.-

Thanks so much for all your replies. Here's the reason I asked that question::: I'm searching for my birth family(I'm adopted) and in the search my investigator was given some info from someone who said one of my cousins, a Harry "Red" Beppler played a character called Freckles in Our Gang/Little Rascals, but I never remembered that character. ("course that was a few years back,ha ha) Looks like for now this was a dead end in my search. Thanks again for all the replies... "O'tay, Butweete"? G

Yeah- that name is unfamiliar. IMDB doesn't list anyone named "Beppler" as having appeared in any film- not that they are always accurate. It is possible that he was an extra in a film, or films. There are several unidentified kids out there, but none of the major players.

They call Mickey Daniels that on that 50s show where they all had a reunion- well, not all of them, but Joe Cobb, Mickey Daniels, Jackie Condon, etc etc.

Mickey had no teeth! The poor guy should not have opened his mouth.

Yes, it was really sad to see that. And you could tell he was nervous. He died in such a sad way too, in obscurity with no one to claim the body.

Here is a 1928 newspaper article, referring to Harry Spear as Freckles.

Speaking of Mickey Daniels again, I vaguely remember reading that he has a daughter. It this true? If so, how is she? Is she still living?

I also read that he had a daughter, but have no idea if she is alive- or where she is. Here is another newspaper photo that shows the cast holing a sign referring to Harry Spear as "Freckles."

Even the local small town versions of Our Gang, often orchestrated by local cinemas or newspapers, frequently had a 'Freckles'...
