I need to replace my 7-volume DVD set of the Roach talkies. Do I want the set or the individual releases? It seems like one is spruced up and the other is not?

I personally have the seven individual DVDs and I'm perfectly happy with them. As I've already got them I haven't bothered to duplicate them by buying the set too. So, I couldn't say which is the better option or even if there is any noticeable difference, other than the seven individual DVDs probably take up more shelf space. In mitigation I think that they can be cheaper to purchase than the set and if you damaged one you'd only need to replace one, not an entire set. If you check out Amazon I think that the individual DVDs are recommended as being the best option, by several reviewers.

I understand there have been complaints about missing footage on the set's version of 'Washee Ironee,' but I have no idea if that's been fixed in the individual versions. I, myself, would assume the set's cheaper and less trouble.

Only downside to the individual volumes is that #6 is out of print, and you don't get the bonus disc with some of the silent shorts and Our Gang interviews (and that lazy documentary that uses clips of Farina whenever Sunshine Sammy is mentioned!)
As I understand, the issues on the complete set were later fixed by Vivendi. I know I've come across at least one person who had the full set with all restored prints and with the inaccuracies in the bonus booklet fixed. Though I can't say for sure if the complete set you'd purchase from Amazon is the 'fixed' one or not. I've stuck with the original eight disc set this whole time.
So... um... I guess you should buy the complete set rather than the individual volumes, if only to have #6. The main drawback to the original eight disc set was that about 12 of the prints were from Blackhawk Films, and not restored. It's something I can personally live with, but others understandably aren't thrilled with that.

I purchased the boxed set and it did not appear to contain any Blackhawk prints.

Oh, good. Guess those issues have been resolved for the boxed set after all.
