I'm new here and happy to be a part of this group. I thought I would be one of the oldest but I find out someone here is 116!Down to business. 20 or more years ago I scoured every video store including the little ones for Our Gang video tapes to take home and copy them at slow speed for maximum length! I still watch the 3 tapes with 6 hours worth of material warts and all. Time to upgrade. I will not buy the Genius box for obvious reasons. If I see another Blackhawk title card I'll scream! And having the series in order does not appeal to me. I like to jump around the years. So many 11 DVD sets! One set put out by Yesteryear video looks promising but a bit pricey. It does not duplicate Came The Brawn. Suggestions Please?

If I'm not mistaken, all these 11-DVD sets out there are missing the MGM roaring lion at the beginning of the shorts. My best suggestion would probably be just get the Cabin Fever laserdiscs and transfer them to DVD yourself. Or you could wait and see how the German Kinowelt DVDs will be like when they're out next week. Their Laurel and Hardy sets were supposedly excellent. And you'll need a region free DVD player. Nothing's ever easy in the world of Hal Roach comedies.

I thought I would be one of the oldest but I find out someone here is 116! Okay, I'm sorry, this is a bit off topic but I have to ask... Is someone here really 116? Because I'm pretty sure they were joking. The oldest woman in the world died yesterday, and she was 115. And I hardly doubt that the oldest person on earth would be on this forum. So, can someone please tell me if the 116 year old thing is real or not? Thanks, and sorry for the OT post... but I just had to ask that.

Either joking or it was a typo.

Without scouring the Forum, has anyone here actually bought the Cabin Fever Laserdiscs and transfered them to DVD? Were those laserdiscs available for volumes 1-12 only or all 21 volumes? If someone has, they should post in that entry in the Trade/Sell section of this forum. To me, that would be worth getting over the DVD collection that came out last year.

The laserdiscs were released of all 21 volumes. I haven't transferred my copies of them. I'm holding out for those Kinowelt DVDs to save myself the trouble.

You're gonna hate the PAL speedup on those Kinowelt discs. I have the Laurel and Hardy sets and the effect on the audio with the PAL speedup is quite distracting.

OK crabby, I just splurged today and did what I said I was not going to do and that is ... I bought the new DVD set from Genius Products that came out last year. Went to Best-Buy and they had 2 copies on the shelf. I did this for you!!! Well, not really, but this forum topic got me thinking about that Genius Set again. I wanted to see for myself if this set, which contains a bunch of the Blackhawk prints and supposedly does not match the Cabin Fever VHS tapes in terms of quality, is really as disappointing as others on this forum have said.
My verdict so far (I have watched the Special Features on DISC 8 and all of the shorts on DISC 1) ... DON'T BUY THIS SET. Do what Mark suggested above and hold out a bit longer to see if the German set is better. Just my 2 cents, I hope I didn't confuse you too much ;D!

Do what Mark suggested above and hold out a bit longer to see if the German set is better. Just my 2 cents, I hope I didn't confuse you too much ;D! 16 of the shorts on the Genius set are Blackhawk prints. The rest of them are the original versions from the same source as the Cabin Fever versions, but on dvd, instead of inferior laserdisc or VHS. So while you're not getting ALL the films in the best quality, the majority of them are there in better quality. It is most unfortunate that Genius screwed up their set with the Blackhawk prints. I doubt they made much profit from their sales at this point, especially with all the bad press among fans. Furthermore, I can imagine anyone else releasing these films again in the next several years. So I think we have to reconsider the Genius set...unless, of course, VHS or Laserdiscs are your cup of tea. If you're lucky enough to be able to play PAL discs on your dvd player, then try the German set. (Many dvd players won't play them.) It looks like it's missing several shorts tho'. At least the Genius set has those shorts. Also, all the films on the German discs will be sped up by 4% due to PAL conversion. I'd rather have a scratchier version of a film than one that plays too fast, but that's just me. Let's also not forget that the silent films on the German set will most likely have recreated opening titles and intertitles if they're the same versions with Beau Hunks music that were floating around among fans from Kinowelt a few years ago. So while there's no perfect way to get all the Our Gang shorts (I won't even get into the Pathe silents), the Genius set is your best bet at this point. Heck, buy the old Cabin Fever laserdiscs on Ebay and get a laserdisc player to replace those 16 Blackhawk shorts that you don't like. Problem solved.

Thanks to all for your input. I recently saw what they said was a full set of Laurel and Hardy films and imagine this is the one you're talking about. Lazerdiscs! Don't even have a player so out with that idea. When I get some moola, will probably take my chances with the set sold by Yesteryear video. Money back guarranty for any reason. Each disc in individual cases and no Came The Brawn on #11 so that disc has only 7 films. Mr. Wheepwow, you should take you set back to Best Buy and get your money back pronto! Sooner the better. By the way it says I am female on my profile..NOT!...This Crabby ain't no school teacher either.

Thanks for the empathy about my recent purchase, Crabby! I should clarify that I am not completely dissatisfied with my purchase of the Genius set. I enjoyed the special features and interviews on the set. Its just that owning the Cabin Fever DVDs has spoiled me. In my opinion, the remasters of the Genius set (original versions included) DO NOT look as good as the bootleg Cabin Fever DVDs. If you can get those on eBay, you should.

I have the genius set.
It's the best out there for now. I just enjoy them and try to ignore the few faults. My set it perfectly clear for the most part. Yeah, there are one of two scenes cut short in a few of them and yeah the Blackhawk thing is there and they are the worst copies of the set, and yes the lion doesn't always roar. But overall I found the purchase worth it until something better comes out.
