FINALLY, some interesting DVDs coming! I can't wait!!!
This release should be a good time for Laughsmith to come out with their own silent set. And then Warner Bros could possibly follow the trend and release their 1938-44 set.
Ok, I'm stretching.

Sounds exciting. A little expensive at the moment, but finally we're getting a set like this that's not bootleg.

Perhaps this release could also be a good time for C.W.Films and/or Televista's new releases!! Lots of great-seeming possibilities or wishful thinking???

Let's see... each short averages 15 minutes (early ones at 18 minutes, later ones at 10 - 11 minutes) so that's 4 shorts per hour. You can get 4 hours of DVD-quality material onto one dual-layer or double-sided disc, so that's 16 shorts per disc. Multiply that by 8 and you get 128 shorts fitting comfortably on 8 dual-layered or double-sided discs.

I didn't think about the dual-layered disc. I think it would be dual-layered rather than double-sided. People don't like double-sided discs.

Wow that is pretty cool. I have a similar collection. But the one that I have is eleven dvds and has I think more than 80 shorts.

What I'm wondering is: Is Genius Products the same company as Genius Entertainment? If so, then their idea of 'uncut' might not mean the same thing as it did on the Cabin Fever releases. It certainly looks promising from the Amazon page, though.

Hallmark must have handed them over, or they somehow got copies of the true uncut prints, because if they were just using the TV prints, not all 80 of the Roach talkies were available on TV, right? Railroadin', Big Ears, and several others... And I LOVE the cover!

I think we'll be OK! -- found this on Wikipedia regarding RHI Entertainment
RHI Entertainment, the owners of much of the Hal Roach catalog, licensed the Little Rascals home video rights to Cabin Fever Entertainment in 1993. Between 1994 and 1995, Cabin Fever issued all eighty Roach talkies (including a restored sound version of Railroadin') in a twenty-two volume Little Rascals VHS tape set. Each volume, hosted by film historian Leonard Maltin, featured four digitally restored and uncut shorts, complete with their original Our Gang title cards. Six DVD's, comprising of contents of the first 12 VHS tapes, were also made available. In 1998, Cabin Fever shut down and sold the Little Rascals home video rights to Hallmark Entertainment, who re-issued the first ten volumes of the Cabin Fever VHS set, and released two Little Rascals DVD compilations. A third DVD, entitled Little Rascals Collectors' Series Volume III, was issued on November 15, 2005, and includes ten sound shorts. RHI acquired Hallmark Entertainment in 2006, and therefore again assumed control of the Roach-era materials. Its current home video partner, Genius Products, will issue all eighty Roach-era sound shorts in an eight-disc DVD set on October 28, 2008

^ While I believe these will be true uncut prints, I don't count Wikipedia as a reliable source. Articles can be edited by anyone who assume things or jump to conclusions.

That sounds pretty good to me. If RHI acquired the rights to the original versions and is affiliated with Genius, then 'uncut' probably really means 'uncut.' I was looking at the previous Genius release the other night (watching "Free Wheeling") and was amazed at how sharp the master looks, even if it is the TV print. But will the 80 shorts be in chronological order? That would be cool!
