www.youtube.com/watch?v=loreDu0gH_gOh my goodness. LOL! Unbelievable. I just love how the reporter asked him to reveal something that only Buckwheat would know, and he goes "Well, uuuuhhhh.... Spanky and I did a film.... in the haunted house..............." Nice.

I'm surprised Spanky didn't rip him a new one when he had the chance. I always imagined him to be somewhat confrontational with people.

I'm surprised Spanky didn't rip him a new one when he had the chance. I always imagined him to be somewhat confrontational with people. I thought the same thing; Spanky was remarkably restrained considering he was obviously furious. I remember watching the 20/20 episode and being horrified that they actually believed this guy. I don't think I ever watched the show again after that. If they couldn't get their sources squared away for a story like this - Hal Roach himself was still alive then, as even "Buckwheat" pointed out - then they couldn't be trusted to get anything right.

They wouldn't have had to bother asking Roach. The Maltin & Bann book has been a mainstay in the bookstores since '77. Or, for that matter, they could have found a Players Casting Directory from the late '30s or early '40s and easily found William 'Buckwheat' Thomas in one of those.

WHEN THE STORY BROKE ON THE 20/20 SHOW, AND THEN THE HOAX WAS REVEALED, TO ABC'S EMBARRASSMENT, I WAS AT THAT TIME EMCEEING THE KINGSTON THEATER ORGAN CONCERTS IN KINGSTON, ONTARIO. EVERYONE KNEW I HAD BEEN IN A FEW "LITTLE RASCALS" EPISODES, SO AT THE NEXT CONCERT I MADE A POINT OF SAYING, "I AM THE REAL THING, AND I HAVE A PAYSTUB FROM HAL ROACH STUDIOS TO PROVE IT!" THE AUDIENCE ROARED WITH LAUGHTER. ANOTHER MAN IN PAHRUMP, NEVADA, POSED FOR MANY YEARS AS THE GENUINE "FROGGY" OF "LITTLE RASCALS" FAME. AT A LIBRARY APPEARANCE THERE TWO YEARS AGO, I TOLD THE SAD STORY OF "FROGGY" (WILLIAM LAUGHLIN) DYING AS A VERY YOUNG MAN, AND HAVING MET SOME FOLKS AT THE LONE PINE FILM FESTIVAL WHO HAD COMFORTED "FROGGY'S" PARENTS AFTER THE YOUNG MAN'S DEATH. TOO BAD MORE PEOPLE DON'T LOOK INTO THE MALTIN-BANN BOOK FOR A GOOD REFERENCE. LAURA JUNE
