Have you got any favourite Our Gang character names? I like the name Scooter, it's an interesting and unusual name but it's not my favourite. Actually I can't decide between my two favourites which one I like the best. Cooty Martin, is a great name that really has me scratching my head, wondering where the inspiration came from. And my other absolute favourite just has to be Spukey AKA Spooky AKA Spuky. I've even managed to unearth a photo of him. So what are your favourite Character names? Spanky's Mum is disallowed.

...is a great name that really has me scratching my head, wondering where the inspiration came from. You can say that for just about any name H. M. "Beanie" Walker came up with. I like "Bonedust" and "'Breezy' Brisbane."

The previous poster stole my choices!
I guess I'll have to settle for Woim, mainly because it evolved so organically. He was supposed to be The Worm but Butch pronounced it Woim so that's what it became...

I like "Bonedust" and "'Breezy' Brisbane." My comment about head scratching was a pun on the name Cooty, as cooties were a nickname for head lice. I'd imagine that back in the 1920s there were plenty of kids with that nickname and with head lice. I like the name Bonedust too. Bone dust was a high phosphate fertilizer, made from ground animal bones, but when I see the name it always seems as though it should have something to do with Voodoo.

I've just added a poll. You can select up to five (5) choices. I've tried to include as many interesting and unusual character as I can think of but I'm sure that I've missed some, such as Light-fingered Lester and Bicarbonated Billy. If one of your favourites isn't listed then simply vote 'Other' and make a post about who it is.
Oops, I forgot all about Spanky!

Getting every possibility on a poll is hard. You missed Wheezer, and I guess Beezer, though as a one-timer that name isn't so prominent. Then's there's Booker T. Bacon and Boxcar.

Yeah, there are quite a few one time characters with interesting names but I made the decision to leave those out. However yep, I did completely forget to include Wheezer, as well as Spanky. Unfortunately now that the poll is active I don't have access to it, so I can't edit it and add any more names.

Who was Spukey?

That is the great unanswered question of the age. His name appears in more than one short and it's variously spelled Spukey, Spuky and Spooky. His name appears on lists twice in Telling Whoppers, he's apparently a member of Our Gang but we never get to see him, at least I don't think that we do. But whoever he was he sure had a great name.

I'm not sure about the best, but for the worst, I'd go with Pleurisy in a landslide! Terrible name!!!!

In doing research for my website, I've stumbled across a couple of 1926 articles that mention a new member of the Gang - "Vermicelli" (sometimes shortened to "Vermie"). Turns out that this was a nickname intended for Mildred Kornman.
Other articles refer to Jannie Hoskins/Mango as "Aroma," which is my candidate for worst nickname. Pleurisy and Vermie aren't far behind.

Aroma certainly stinks and Vermicelli is a creepy pasta but I have to agree with tboneator64 that Pleurisy is far and away the worse name of the lot. I'm just glad that they didn't continue that trend, so we were spared the dubious pleasure of ever encountering a Diphtheria, Scarlatina, Bubonic, Gonorrhea, Leprosy or a Syphilis.

Yes, in my opinion Pleurisy is the worst name. Aroma isn't great, but is a little better than Odor and Stench, and possibly Stinky.
Another overlooked name is Cotton.

In these racially enlightened times Cotton is probably better forgotten. The way it's going I'll need to start a second poll to include all the names that I missed from this one. Stinky is a bit insulting but I can actually imagine kids using that as a nickname for a kid with flatulence issues, or who didn't change his socks often enough but Pleurisy? That isn't the sort of names that kids would use and it simply isn't a nice basis for a name. It's on par with Pneumonia, actually I'm surprised that they didn't use that one too maybe combined with a twin called Consumption?
