It might be good for a few chuckles and a chance to see some new talented mugs. I got a kick out of the second audition video for Butch, Dawson Kinloch. He definitely reminded me of Tommy Bond. I guess he didn't get the part though...
Nothing beats the original, but I did watch and buy the 1994 movie, and chances are I'll buy this one too when it comes out on DVD. Some of the kids involved put on good performances. I'll give them a chance. I thought Bug Hall was good as Alfalfa in 1994.
You said it! ;D

Okay, after doing a little more reading I decided that I'll buy this new "Little Rascals" movie to check out the performance of Jet Jurgensmeyer as Spanky. I love that name! ;D
Jet Jurgensmeyer. I don't know anything about him, but I like him already...
I look forward to seeing him as Spanky.

I'm torn about the new Rascals movie. Part of me is happy that a movie (any movie) connected with the Rascals is being made at all. I view this as a potentially good thing as even if it only steers 0.01% of its viewers in the direction of the original movies it is doing something positive. I also hope that the new movie itself might be entertaining and high quality. Unlike some Our Gang enthusiasts I actually enjoyed the 1994 movie, in much the same way as I enjoyed the late 1990s Brady Bunch movies. I saw them all as homages to their original inspirations. In the main the castings were good, they used plots from the originals, which were tweaked for a 'new' audience, and they displayed a fondness for the characters they were portraying. However movie versions aren't always successful. I really like the British Horrid Henry cartoon series and when a live action movie was announced I was pretty eager to see it. But boy, was it a load of crap! The casting was just so obviously wrong that it immediately created an insurmountable barrier to the possibility of enjoying anything else about it at all. I've got every one of the Horrid Henry cartoon episodes on DVD but the movie? No way Jose, if somebody gave it to me I'd donate it to a charity shop. So I'm unsure about the new Rascals movie, part of me is hoping for the best and is eager to add another Rascal related item to my collection but the part of me that loathed the Horrid Henry movie fears the worse. I guess I'll make my mind up once I see a trailer or two but I'm not holding out any great hopes.

Oh well having just watched all the audition links above all I can say is that Hal Roach would have had the whole lot of those kids (and their mothers) thrown out of his office for being too stagey. They seem to represent exactly the sort of child performers that the original Rascals was intended to be an antidote against. The most natural of the lot was Porky and in a country which has record levels of childhood obesity he is the obvious exception, because he isn't even slightly fat. The build up for this new Rascals movie has all the hallmarks of a slow motion train crash.

I'm mildly curious about the kid who plays 'Freckled Faced Boy' his name is listed as Billy 4 Johnston, which is positively intriguing and sounds like something out of a Sci-Fi movie like THX1138 or Logan's Run. I found a video of him on YouTube and it looks to me as if the movie producers missed a casting opportunity 'cos he'd have made a good 'Woim.'

As for the poster, find it a little worrisome there are three groups of two: Two white boys, two African-American boys, two girls. I hope this isn't a sign. Still, a direct-to-video sequel to a movie made ten years ago featuring no one from the original cast. Well, that's certainly promising, isn't it?

Incidentally, that cast: I finally figured it out. They've got Buckwheat, but also Stymie to counter charges of racism. They've got Darla, but also Mary Ann to counter charges of sexism. And I'm not sure why they went with a skinny Spanky but it's not important.
I'll probably check it out if it's an option but I won't lose any sleep if it's not.

Oh, and if they show up, a series of Youtube skits starring the aforementioned Skinny Spanky...
He also appeared on some sort of country music stage show. Presumably, his ability to do a credible Southern accent helped him get the part.

Oh, and I LOVE the name Jet Jurgensmeyer. When he grows up, he'll be an international spy, a porn star, or a samurai robot. Those are his only options.
Seriously, I'm sure he'll be fine. They seem to have chosen him because he can carry off the 'sharp, but not quite as sharp as he thinks' qualities Spanky developed in his mid-period.
By the way, found out the kids will be competing on a talent show against some 'glitzy' competition. Sounds like the return of The International Silver String Submarine Band.

In one of the audition videos, it was revealed that the Submarine Band would indeed return. Waldo attempts to sabotage the contest so that the Silver Stringers will lose. The Masked Marvel will also apparently return.
