I have all VHS. I want to put on DVDs for myself only. Can I do this or are they copyright protected ? I want to buy VHS / DVD unit. Any recommendations on a unit?

I think technically you'd be violating the copyright, but if it's solely for personal use then you can be fairly confident that the FBI won't come busting down your door. I remember reading somewhere about people who used to copy their albums to cassette. Apparently, the courts ruled that it was NOT a violation of the copyright to do this. Things may be different nowadays, though.

I'm not asking if it's lawful but technically are they copyright protected as to prevent machine from copying?ty

All of the films on the Cabin Fever collections are copyrighted except "Dogs of War", "Derby Day", "Bear Shooters", "School's Out", and "Our Gang Follies of 1938", but VHS tapes don't have copyright protection (or you can at least get past it on the VHS to DVD unit I have). If you are just doing it for yourself, you should be fine.
For a VHS to DVD unit, I recommend the Honestech VHS to DVD 5.0 Deluxe. I have had it for just under a year now and it has worked great for me! Hope this helps.

Test the machine before you buy one. My old VHS/DVD burner would not copy a copy protected tape.

I guess I didn't read the original post the same way, I read the original post as he was looking for a unit that played both formats as a combo unit. If he is looking for just a ripper, then the Honestech isn't a bad choice.
