If this abuse thing is true, I find it a little odd that his stepson can get away with it. I mean, Mickey is a celebrity, you'd think he'd have hired people helping him, or at least his wife or biological children would prevent him from being mistreated.

I've gradually been posting my McGuire collection on YouTube. Right now, I'm up to about 20 shorts. This is perhaps one of the most interesting shorts in the series, where Mickey and the kids go into Harold Lloyd territory on a dangerous skyscraper. One wonders just how safe these kids really were. Out of curiousity I bought a Mickey McGuire DVD on ebay with four shorts and I was laughing out loud like a darn fool. Oh my God those were funny! I'll have to check out more of them wherever I can find them...

Thanks! I think it was watching one your YouTube videos that made me order that DVD. Are there any other official DVD releases of his stuff? I would be especially interested in the sound era stuff, although I have to admit the silent one had me laughing. A big part of my enjoyment of watching these old films is listening to the kids talk in the old style lingo. They always sound so pissed off! It beats anything modern as far as I'm concerned...
You know, ever since I started watching Our Gang again, my spelling and grammer has sure gotten worse. I always have to go back and correct somethin'! It must have been Miss Crabtree ;D

They did add music to some scenes in the sound films, but in my opinion, the music stops the films from moving at such a slow pace. My only complaint is that four of the sound films ("Mickey's Clean-Up", "Mickey's Disguises", "Mickey's Charity", and "Mickey's Race") are taken from a feature film compilation "Mickey the Great", and are therefore edited down to about half of their length. Ah, well. Any McGuire short is better than none at all. www.8thman.com/m_mick.html

Behind the scenes tidbits from Richard Lertzman (author of The Life and Times of Mickey Rooney):
Series director Albert Herman was good friends with Bob McGowan. McGowan supposedly had some involvement with the development of the McGuire series.
The series ceased production in 1932, but several additional shorts were released through the next two years. So yes, Shirley Jean Rickert did apparently go to McGuire immediately after leaving Our Gang.
I recently mentioned spotting Jimmy Robinson in the Roach comedy "Wild Babies!" (The Boy Friends). I also noticed Marvin Stephens in the Charley Chase short "Midsummer Mush." I'm guessing these were both post-McGuire films.
