Tread carefully... have you ever seen the "comedian" Carrot Top? The cheese motif is funny, hence beaten to death by Monty Python. John Cleese's family name was in fact "Cheese," though changed before he came along. My dog, who does not have a circle drawn around his eye but is still adorable, is gaga for cheese, pretty much above all foods. A bit o' fermented curd never goes awry.

LOL, we thought he might have had a little *Methodist* in him, but the DNA test revealed full-blooded Pomeranian. I've tried talking to him about John Wesley, and the Arminian view more generally, but he's either Jewish or a Calvinist. Loves pastrami, though that could point either way. Mrs. May Wallace could not be reached for comment. I am sure, btw, that someone has mentioned at some point here the famous SNL "Buckwheat Is Dead" sketch. Never thought it (or Eddie Murphy's "imitation") particularly funny, even though that was a full-on spillover of the Rascals into the very soul of late 20th-century pop culture. The gag below, however, was (IMO) residually funny:

...and, almost forgot; The Onion's Our Dumb Century had a spoof news story, dated mid-1930s about a "gang" which was terrorizing Culver City with such misdemeanors as pie-stealing and giving joke answers to history questions. Spanky was quoted as saying that the allegations were "applesauce."

Semi-Our Gang reference - the trailer for HORROR NOIRE, a new documentary focusing on blacks in horror films, includes a clip of Sunshine Sammy in the East Side Kids movie SPOOKS RUN WILD.

Still haven't seen THE FLORIDA PROJECT, an Our Gang-inspired indie flick that came out recently, but I'm watching an interview with MST3K's Trace Beaulieu and Frank Conniff, and they like the movie a lot. Frank mentioned that the end credits give a special thanks to Hal Roach, Spanky McFarland, and a few others associated with the Rascals. Trace added, "The first few minutes with the kids, I go, 'this is the Little Rascals movie that we should have had, instead of the one from 20 years ago.'"

I am so gratified someone has called out that awful '94 production, which seemed absolutely devoid of the spirit and ingenuity of the originals. But now I have to find THA FLORDIA PROJECT!!

Judging by the trailer, the director took the route of having 'natural' kid actors rather than the professionally trained ones. Definitely a good move. www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwQ-NH1rRT4Trace and Frank go into the Rascals at 30:33. youtu.be/EAwU7APMKN0?t=1803(For MST3K fans, Trace and Frank also mention a Mad Scientist spinoff that they pitched, but regrettably was never produced.) Now I have to dig it up. Kinda gave up movies a while back, save for "Stan & Ollie," which was a worthwhile return to that medium.

Oh, speaking of STAN & OLLIE - can't believe I forgot to mention this - Little Rascals one-sheets appear around the recreated Hal Roach studio in the film. Fans will know that this isn't historically accurate. The series was still known as "Our Gang" at the time, and the posters are actually from early '50s Monogram Pictures reissues. The producers probably figured more people would be familiar with the "Little Rascals" name, though.

Can't believe I missed that. Now I will rewatch it. TYFT. Btw, Roach was portrayed as kind of a bad character in the film. By all accounts this was quite untrue.

As much as I enjoyed this movie (the performances from the cast alone make it a must-see), there are some fabricated bits I’m not a huge fan of. Roach and Laurel had their disagreements, but those tend to happen when you’ve got two bosses - the head of the L&H unit and the head of the studio. Two different voices trying to make a good film. There were similar situations between Roach and Harold Lloyd, and later Roach and Charley Chase. Roach and Lloyd remained good friends in spite of their differences. I will say that I don’t think Roach’s decision to put Laurel and Hardy under separate contracts was a particularly friendly move, but otherwise, he was well liked. Patsy Kelly even said that Hal was the best boss she ever had. Then there’s the whole “backstabbing” scenario with ZENOBIA, and later with signing a contract within Fox. Both were somewhat fictionalized for the sake of adding conflict, something that we often see in biopics. What is true, and not many people know this, is that there was a brief conflict between Laurel and Hardy, as evident from a letter Laurel wrote to someone during the late ‘40s. This was reported in the US Tours book on the team. What the basis of the argument was, I’m not sure. But it evidently cleared the air rather quickly, as if it never happened! Of course, like I said, biopics like to add drama and create villains. They’re more narrative than documentary.

Well put, and good background. I *do* remember a horrible battle between Stan and Ollie, which went as follows: Ollie: "Now, Stanley, you know that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." Stan: "... Jack who?"

Of course, like I said, biopics like to add drama and create villains. They’re more narrative than documentary. Since I've not been able to find another place online to discuss the "Stan and Ollie" film, I'm glad it has been brought up here. The couple of previews I've seen for this film seem to highlight scenes that show some fairly severe tensions between Stan and Babe. I have probably read every book about Laurel and Hardy except the one about the 50s tours, so perhaps I'm not qualified to comment. But in none of the other books can I ever recall any account of these tensions. So to your point above about adding drama, how accurate are these scenes in terms of anything we know happened in real life? I'm not a fan of biopics in general, because — no matter how well-done they may be — they have the effect of implanting the actors' portrayals of real-life characters in people's minds, which may not be at all accurate. In other words, for all the praise heaped on the Johnny Cash movie, I've seen enough footage of the real Johnny Cash and June Carter. I don't want to have that supplanted by actors' conception of them. If I want to know more about them, I'll read books, not see a movie. My concerns about "Stan and Ollie" that I outlined above have made me even more reluctant than usual to see this film, despite my love of The Boys. What's the deal?
