Watching the movie now, the one thing I find odd is how noticeable the age difference between Alfalfa and Darla is. Doing a quick google search, Brittany Ashton Homes would have been 4/5 and Bug Hall was around 8/9. I always thought the same thing about the original series. Alfalfa, Waldo & Butch all seemed far too old to be interested in a girl of Darla's age but even way back at the beginning of the series similar scenarios took place with several of the boys dwarfing the girls who they were supposedly 'courting.'  |

Couple notes: Awhile back, someone posted about the kid who played Woim being friendly with 'Spanky' and 'Alfalfa.' That's often how it works out; some kids are paired together and have to develop chemistry, but others just meet on the set and become friends. For example, on ODD SQUAD, the actors who played Odd Todd and Otto were friends, and the actors who played Oscar and Oren still have their own shared Youtube page where they post funny videos.
As for the age difference, I suspect some of it was just that Darla was there and about the same size as the boys. At that age, girls are often taller so that might have been a factor as well.

I'm pretty certain from what I've read that the Kibrick brothers didn't have anything particularly nice to say about Carl Switzer. I got the distinct impression that they thought he was disruptive, mean spirited, big headed and aggressive or at least that's how they painted him.

I think myhomeo was referring to the actors from the '90s movie. I don't recall Leonard ever saying anything about Carl. Their time together was relatively brief, so it wouldn't surprise me if Leonard had few Alfalfa anecdotes, if any. Sidney might have had a few things to say in that E! Entertainment documentary, but in typical E! fashion, only the 'juicy' material would have been left in. Positive stories, not so much. I don't have the Life and Times of Our Gang book on hand at the moment. Maybe there was something in there I'm missing? As for the age difference between Alfalfa and Darla? Well, Carl Switzer was born in 1927, and Darla Hood in 1931. Bug Hall was born in 1985, Brittany Ashton Holmes in 1989. It was weird even before the '90s movie!  |
