There is a reply to the one review for Volume 1 about the DVDs being corrected, and that reply confirms that these DVDs include the 35mm prints!
The menus and bonus content are identical to the previous box set release. This means we can purchase the individual volumes and ditch the old ones! ;D

Is there anybody on the board that's tested Volume 1 yet? I was thinking of buying it just to see if the reviewer is correct. If everything looks good, then I'll buy the rest. This would then be the first truly definitive DVD release of the Roach talkies. It's about time.

I'm going to try to locate these DVDs after work today. My local Target didn't have any of these in stock, so I'm hoping Best Buy will have them. If I find them, I'll let you know if no one else already does.
If they are indeed corrected, I'll try to make time to update the main page and make everyone aware of the good news.

I am curious about the completeness of "Bear Shooters" on Volume 1 and the spitting scene from "Washee Ironee" on Volume 5. Does the heavier video compression make the new DVDs look worse than the Cabin Fever DVDs?

Volumes 3-7 arrived yesterday. The first 2 have not come yet.

These DVDs are hard to find. I found them only at one store, 30 miles away from where I live. I got all 7 volumes... Volume 1 is indeed ALL original. I'm checking every short on each disc. I'll post again shortly when I get through them all!

Having scanned all the shorts, we have a definitive DVD collection of the Hal Roach talking shorts!
As for Bear Shooters and Washee Ironee, the few seconds missing are still missing. Cabin Fever always had this copy of Bear Shooters. But I'm surprised Cabin Fever didn't junk the first remastering of Washee Ironee with the missing scene and just keep the 100% complete copy. But if you already have the Cabin Fever DVD (Volume 5&6), the complete copy is there.
As for the picture quality on these DVDs, they are excellent in my opinion, and obviously better than the Cabin Fever DVDs (far less pixels). They compare to Hallmark's.

It's a shame about the missing footage in Washee Ironee. Cabin Fever did indeed correct this in later releases. Maybe Vivendi Entertainment will do the same using that 100% complete master if contacted by the right person. I would buy another Volume 5 for the missing material if I knew it was complete.

This is exciting. Putting together the 1927-1929 MGM silents from Germany, these RHI DVDs, and the 52 MGM Our Gang DVDs, we now have an official definitive collection of all the existing MGM shorts!! (minus The Old Wallop and Fair & Muddy, of course. No major studio has copies of these).

In addition to The Old Wallop and Fair and Muddy, don't forget School Begins, which showed up at the Library of Congress recently.

Received my copy of Volume 1. It's nice to see that they're using the RHI prints, but I noticed that "Lazy Days" is still seriously cropped.

Thanks for the research and information! I just ordered volumes 1-7. It stinks I wasted my money on the first set and will cost me another $40 to in effect fix the box to what it was advertised the first time to be - criminal if you ask me. But I'm glad to finally have these short available the way they are supposed to be. So for picture quality - are they better than what is in the box IMHO I though the Cabin Fever DVD's were a bit better. If they have similar bitrate to the Hallmark I'd be happy.

Can someone tell me if the new individual DVDs match the content of the box set DVDs identically except for the corrected prints (do they have the introductions by Richard Bann, Dickie Moore, etc)?
What about the silk screen image on the disc itself? Is that the same as the box set discs, or is there some indication it is from an updated pressing?
And, just because I'm too lazy to check myself, what discs on the box set have the Blackhawk prints that need to be replaced with the new discs?
It's a shame this new series didn't include an additional 2-disc volume containing all the MGM silents, like it's German counterpart. Any way we could petition them to release another volume with the silents?
Thanks for the info in advance!
