I recently ordered "Our Gang - Volume #1 (1922-1923)" from Grapevine Video, because it includes a near complete print of Fire Fighters. I was shocked at how much better the films look on this DVD than their old VHS's. Back when I got all their VHS's, I believe they simply pointed a camera to a screen, making the picture look so light and horrible. I couldn't even see everything in the picture. These were so hard to watch I almost *never* played the tapes and they just collected dust. For this newer DVD, the films look as if they were actually professionally transferred to video and I'm seeing the films just how I should be seeing them. Does anyone know when they're planning to release more? As soon as there's an opportunity to upgrade my Grapevine collection, I'm jumping on it as soon as I find out.
I also received the 3 volumes by reelclassicsdvd.com and was also pleased with everything on there. Like the new Grapevine DVD, the films also appear to be professionally transferred. I also like the fact the films are projected at slower speed (but not too slow, like Video Yesteryear), which is how I prefer the silents to be shown. Grapevine did this for some of the films on their DVD, too!

I thought Grapevine closed down its business a few years ago. Either way, this DVD release has been out since 2006. I too had high hopes that Grapevine would continue this series of DVD releases, but unfortunately that seems very unlikely now. I really wish they had continued releasing these to DVD now. And yes, their old VHS copies had very mediocre prints.
Mark, did you catch the 'green tinted' image of "Young Sherlocks" on this DVD during the scene where Ernie puts the green glasses on Dinah the Mule? I thought that was cute, but it obviously wasn't how the scene originally played.

I haven't watched the entire DVD all the way yet, but I'll look out for that green glasses part. That's a shame about Grapevine discontinuing their DVDs.

Good news...Grapevine DID go out of business around 10 years ago, but the owner, Jack Hardy, couldn't adjust to retirement and decided to start it up again. Grapevine is alive and well... www.grapevinevideo.com

Jack is a fantastic guy to deal with! Keep a good eye out as he will be expanding his Our Gang collection I have been supplying Jack with some films for the past several years in order to expand he selections. It is true he quality is going up, he invested a LOT of money in some new equipment resulting in far superior end product. Nothing is perfect since everything is old and most of the time not new condition, however what he is turning out now is much better than what he turned out years ago. ReelClassicDVD.com is Mark Roth's "store" He operates that as a hobby but turns out great stuff. I have bought, sold, traded with him for years as well.

I'm sure Mr. Hardy's future releases will be great. I haven't bought anything from ReelClassicDVD yet, but judging by the images on the site, the quality looks excellent. I'm hoping to purchase some of the East Side Kids movies from that site in the near future, as most copies of those films are unwatchable.

tid-bit update: I got an email from Jack this morning. He is working on a second Our Gang DVD release. I don't know the titles however I will get it no matter what. Even though most of his stuff is DVD-R, he only puts out stuff that is either PD or he has rights to it. I know for sure The Spanking Age will not be in his next Our Gang DVD. He does have a good copy waiting to be released too...

I wonder will Grapevine ever release another DVD? It's been years since they have done anything with the Our Gang series at all.
