A 1970's-vintage song, 'Love Stinks' by, I believe, REO Speedwagon, opens with dialogue from an old Rascals short: "Hey, romeo! What about your promise to the He-Man Woman-Haters' Club?" "I'm sorry, Spanky. I have to live my own life." "Tough Guys" is the REO Speedwagon song that features the Spanky/Alfalfa conversation.

My apologies. I dimly remembered the song, ran across the mention in the Maltin-Bann book, and apparently combined two completely different songs by two completely different bands in my head. Sorry.

Nah, it's okay. I wasn't sure about the song either. I just did a quick internet search.

The video for "My Doorbell" by The White Stripes is an obvious nod to the gang putting on a talent show.

I just watched an episode of the nanny where Fran had to go into a men's club to talk to Maxwell and women weren't allowed in the club and Fran said "What is this? The He-man woman hater's club?!'

Another one: On the KATHY GRIFFIN: MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST Fourth Season episode 'Fly The Super Gay Skies,' comedian Kathy Griffin entertains on a chartered 'Gay' flight from the US to Australia, accompanied by a Black drag queen who goes by the name Buckwheat.

Can't believe I forgot to mention this: In the 60's, there was a pop group that went by the name Spanky And Our Gang. Spanky was a girl, I believe. Apparently, she got the nickname because her last name was McFarlane.

There was also The Young Rascals. Both series names were altered for pop group use.

But are they named that after Buckwheat of Our Gang, or just after the grain itself? I have a buckwheat pillow, but I don't think it's named after Buckwheat Thomas. Although that is what my hair looks like when I wake up sometimes.

Although that is what my hair looks like when I wake up sometimes. "Buckwheat Zydeco is the stage name of Stanley Dural, Jr. (born November 14, 1947), an American accordionist and zydeco musician. He acquired his nickname as a youth, because, with his braided hair, he looked like the character Buckwheat from Our Gang/The Little Rascals movies." Well that answers that, I guess. I had heard of Buckwheat Zydeco but never looked into his music, or his bio. And actually, I thought he was a they. (I have heard of Queen Ida and the Bon Temps Zydecos, though.)
Thanks, rhapsody.

You aren't wrong, rascalwatcher, Buckwheat's band is often simply referrred to as Buckwheat Zydeco as well.
Now, we still have the Weezer question to solve....

I'm familiar with the name of the band, but not their music. However, a little cursory Googling indicates that one of the band members was given the nickname 'Weezer' because he was asthmatic. If that's accurate, it's coincidental.
Now, the spelling and pronunciation of 'weezer' and 'wheezer' still gets under my skin, but that's irrelevant to the discussion. I'll just say that in my life I've never heard the word "wheeze" pronounced as "weeze."
