Hello all, I knew a wonderful red-haired, freckle-faced old man named "Holy" Hubert Lindsey. He had been a well-known campus preacher in Berkely Cal. in the 60's. He was born in 1914 and died in about 2004 I believe. It was said that he was in only 2 talkies and the rest were silent, but that he was the original "Alfalfa" though originally known as "Freckles", and that his favorite episode was about a pie eating contest.
I've never seen his name recognized, but wondered if it could be he was in only a few rare episodes. I have a photo of Our Gang and it sure looks like the man I knew. Could anyone please confirm or deny this. Or could you advise of original silent episodes or photos I could reference to look for him? I sincerely appreciate your help. Kevin

Is there any way you could post this photo? Also, did he ever live near Kansas City?

He has a lot of the facts mixed up. It does not sound ligit to me, but perhaps he just made a mistake with the character name or whatever. Can you show us the picture?

There was only one Alfalfa in the series, and he joined in 1935, when your friend was already 21 years old. The early freckle-faced boys were sometimes called 'Freckles' in published materials, like newspaper articles and endorsements, but never in the films themselves. None of the regulars over the years were named Hubert Lindsey. At best he may have been an as-yet-unidentified peripheral kid or extra, or perhaps appeared in a rival series.

I appreciate your responses. The photo I have is nothing rare. Just an ad that came maybe 10 years ago offering Little Rascals videos. I recently ran across it and resumed my search. I will have to scan it for you at my brother's when I get a chance. The boy sure looks like Hubert but at least you can tell me if it's not. For some reason, I never did call the number on the ad. It's 800-272-2442 or 509-548-6472 I will try to call it now but maybe it's not current. Thanks again, Kevin

I forgot to say that I don't know if he ever lived in Kansas City. Much of his life reminds me of the adage that "truth is stranger than fiction" You can find out some of that by doing a google search for "Holy Hubert" I will scan the photo when I get a chance. Thanks again, Kevin

I wanted to say also that the ad I have has the name "Leonard Maltin" above "The little Rascals" on every video. Not sure if that's a clue. I'm sure many of you know who remasters and publishes a lot of this. Thanks again, Kevin

There's also no pie-eating contest in any of the Little Rascals episodes.

Maybe he was the original 'Vern' in "Stand By Me."

Do you guys remember that post someone made about why people think they were our gangers? That article mentioned an imitation gang in the film 'The Pie Eetin' Champeen". Maybe he was in the fake Our Gang.
