Is is true that Bill Cosby at one time had bought the rights to the Rascals and would not allow them to be shown because of the type casting of minorities in them?

Then what was the deal with that? Back in the early 90s, Spanky came to my college and he seemed pretty mad at Bill Cosby. I wish I'd had the sense of mind to bring a camcorder to the talk he gave. But I did get him to autograph one of the old Cabin Fever videotapes. I recall him saying something like "Ah ha! Here's one of the videotapes! So much for Bill Cosby!"

Spanky must have believed the rumors...... "Around 1989, the rumor began circulating that entertainer Bill Cosby had bought up the rights to the The Little Rascals episodes for the express purpose of keeping them off of television because of their demeaning portrayal of blacks. This rumor has nothing to it, of course: King World Productions has owned and licensed the rights to The Little Rascals for over thirty years. The series has been syndicated to television many times and the video rights to some episodes were licensed to Cabin Fever Entertainment in 1997, but Bill Cosby has never owned any part of the rights to The Little Rascals." www.snopes.com/radiotv/tv/rascals.htm

It sounds like he was *proving* the Bill Cosby rumor to be untrue when he held up a tape and said, "so much for Bill Cosby..." 2). Spanky was already dead when the Cabin Fever set came out in 1994. He died in '93.

Hrm... I guess it's not a Cabin Fever tape then! It's part of a series that, when put together, forms a wooden picket fence along the spine. The pictures on the covers were colorized and I think there were only 2 shorts per tape. I'll have to retrieve the tape from my parents' house in NJ next time I'm back there.
The college he visited was Seton Hall University and it was either 1991 or 1992.
