I heard about some people thinking those two shorts were funny. But WHAT did they laugh at, exactly? There's too many serious parts for Little Rascals comedies. Even during the 'funny' parts, they weren't really all that funny, possibly because of all the drama around it.
Or maybe people just like them for the drama (something different from the rest of the series) because of their historic value (Great Depression), like myself. I just don't particularly think they are funny. But that doesn't explain what was funny about them.

They're definitely in the melodramatic category, and are two of the only films I can think of that can get that melodramatic and still be utterly watchable. They're both huge favorites with me. As far as funny moments go, I'd say that the whole ham-and-eggs-talking part of "Dogs Is Dogs" is hilarious, and Grandma's warm-up before the boxing match in "Fly My Kite" is, too.

Ooh, I agree about Grandma warming up in Fly My Kite. Hilarious!

I find Dogs Is Dogs to be a slight variation of the story of Cinderella.
I've always found that the Little Rascals films aren't funny the way the Laurel & Hardy films and Charley Chase films are.The Our Gang series was slightly more realistic. The children were not too much unlike real children.I suppose that's partly what makes these films so entertaining.Plus some kids probably wish they could do some of the things the Rascals did.

Dogs is Dogs I count among my favourite episodes. I think people like to experiance that emotion now and then, although it is true that there is not much funny about it.

You couldn't have said all that better! What makes Laurel & Hardy funnier is all the slapstick and being complete idiots. I haven't seen very much of Charley Chase, but it's definitely an underrated series. I've probably seen the best of his shorts (On the Wrong Trek, to name one). But The Little Rascals remains a classic series for exactly what it is.

Fly My Kite had a few things that made me laugh like when Stymie kept throwing the rock up in the air and it kept landing on his head! When Mary Ann hits Wheezer with the bat..Wheezer says hit him not me!! Or Chubby say what's the big idea??? When dirty Dan was trying to take the kite!!

I'd have to add too that in the wonderment of episode Fly My Kite,.. there are nifty things about it which would otherwise easily escape the viewer.. like the outside scene of the kids getting back at that dirty Dan the man who wants the old Stock of Grandma's which is the tail of the kite ; things like the wind chasing through the trees and other backdrops that are splendid! .. things like that. Further, it would be pretty obvious of me to also say that this one episode is one of my all time faves.

Dogs is Dogs is great because of Stymie, point blank. The ham and eggs bit is awesome. Fly My Kite has some cute moments too, several because of Stymie, especially the part where he throws the rocks up to hit the guy on the telephone pole and they all come crashing down on his own head. haha

Mark.....I just happend upon this old post...two of my old faves! I think "triumph over evil" is the attraction here. We get to see the "nasties" get theirs! The mean mom gets kicked in her azz. *CHEERS* The mean son gets the WORST and funniest punishment EVER. *WOOT!* And I wanna know what brand of pants the son in law was wearing in "Fly" because he wasn't bleeding at all!! Even after sailing over that glass! But the central themes....yes, very sad indeed... elder and child abuse. 'Taint funny at all. I keep this in mind while watching a show made over 70 years ago. Edited for spelling
