I wonder- if the 8 DVD set is still being manufactured, then why couldn't they just start using the "correct" DVDs? Even if they did it quietly without announcing that the DVDs have been modified, it'd be better than continuing with the Blackhawk versions. Instead, they just removed the top part of the front cover that originally said "Remastered, Restored, Uncut". That would certainly make logical sense, Mark! However, based on what I've read, I don't get that any such change was ever made, which I find especially galling, given the Out Of Print/Going Out Of Print status of the revised DVDs! So it goes! CHEERS! You would think they would have done that. Why they ceased production on the newest set but not the older one is beyond me. The only reason I see for buying the Blackhawk print versions is for the extra disc which unfortunately they did not include in the newer set which is another issue all together.

So should I throw these out? I have 1-5, and 7. Need #6. Are these junk? Are these edited that much!? What do I do to get a more complete unedited set?

So should I throw these out? I have 1-5, and 7. Need #6. Are these junk? Are these edited that much!? What do I do to get a more complete unedited set? Honestly, it's hard to say. So, the Genius Products set - the original 8 disc set - came out in 2008. 18 of the shorts were sourced from lesser quality Blackhawk Films prints, complete with the original opening title cards replaced. In addition to that, the image on LAZY DAYS was cropped, and BEAR SHOOTERS and WASHEE IRONEE were both missing a tiny bit of footage. Vivendi Entertainment then re-released the set, first as 7 individual volumes, and then the full 8 disc set. The Blackhawk prints were replaced with original prints, but I don't know if anything else was corrected. With all of that in mind, if you get the 8 disc set... I don't know what you'll be getting. You might get the Vivendi re-release, or you might get an old Genius set.

As I understand it, when the "corrected" DVDs were released as individual volumes, they also replaced the earlier masters in the box set -- that is, newly-manufactured copies should be the new masters with original titles restored. Now, (1) I don't know if there is any way to identify whether a certain retailer has older or newer stock of the box set, and (2) I don't know if any effort was ever made to "correct" the "bonus disc" (not sold separately) where "Barnum & Ringling Inc." has Blackhawk titles and a 1984 organ score replacing the original.

Yeah, pretty much what I said. Getting the boxed set is kind of a gamble. Purchase with caution, I guess. I don't think they had access to any other print of BARNUM (although the original soundtrack does exist). The accompanying booklet was also altered a bit to replace mistakes from the earlier release - Dickie Moore's picture was used for Scotty Beckett and Donald Haines' was used for Mickey Daniels. The bonus documentary also mistakenly (scratch that, lazily) used clips of Farina when Sunshine Sammy was discussed. I doubt this was ever fixed, but I never risked trying to buy the set again, so I wouldn't know for certain.
