I heard over on the NirateVille forum that the long thought lost "School Begins" exists! The Museum of Modern Art has a 35mm foreign titled version!

Are you a big silent film fan of all genres or just OG silents?

Are you a big silent film fan of all genres or just OG silents? Just Our Gang, but mainly because I haven't seen very many other silents.

I read a few years back that "School Begins" was still extant, but that it was quite a poor copy. Hopefully, that was a totally different print than the one at the Museum of Modern Art. I wonder if they make copies.....

At one time I had one of the only known or un-known of prints of the 1910 short Under The Stars And Bars. I sold it to a Miles collector in the northwest last year. I have it on DVD with The Spanking age and one other short if you are interested in viewing it. Jack Hardy will someday put a music track to it when he gets around to it. If you read Bruce Calvert's review on it at Nitrateville, he viewed my copy.

If some kind of donation fund should be set up in an effort for us to have access to "School Begins", I'd be MORE than happy to contribute or do my part in any way that I can . It's exciting to know that it's at least POSSIBLE that we might someday get to view this "lost" film ! ;D

Now if we can find the other lost films, as well as complete versions of other Our Gang silents. I know that Maltin and Bann weren't even able to view a complete version of "Better Movies". I'm wondering if a complete version could technically be considered 'lost'.
I remember seeing an Our Gang home movie short titled "Growing Pains" on eBay a few times. I found out recently that this was actually a shortened version of "Boys Will Be Joys". Hopefully, the real "Growing Pains" will show up.

Recently I won (on eBay) a small collection of "Our Gang"-derived films . Included was a 100 ft 16mm film entitled "Growing Pains Part 1" . Actually the seller had reported the collection to contain both Parts 1 AND 2 of "Growing Pains", but it actually had 2 copies of Part 1 . I had the film transferred to dvd, and it proved to be footage from "July Days" . So it looks like the title "Growing Pains" was used SEVERAL times by companies which released "Our Gang" extractions: just wish one could be the lost film !!

One rule of thumb: If a company released the Pathe shorts, they almost certainly would not have released the silent MGMs, as Roach seems to have parceled those off separately. In fact, I don't think the silent MGMs were marketed for home movie use in the US until after several of them had gone missing. They seem to have been released on 9.5mm in Europe, though, which makes me think they're out there somewhere. If "The Old Wallop" is any indication, then there might be some reels with foreign titles that nobody realizes are Our Gang films.

Could this be a copy of School Begins? The reel says Excel on it, so I'd bet it's probably from "Commencement Day" or one of the other Pathes.
