 I wish I had a watermelon
« Thread Started on Jun 14, 2005, 8:32pm »

Can anyone elaborate on the story line content of this famous quote? I can't quite remember. Was it a wishing game? Who said it? It has stuck with me since I was a kid...when I use it, nobody knows what I'm talking about. :)

Thanks all!

This is from "A Lad an' a Lamp." The gang finds a lamp like Aladdin's, and Stymie wishes for a watermelon, and possibly a big watermelon when asked to reconsider, if memory serves. This short is also the one where Spanky wishes that Stymie's little brother Cotton turns into a monkey, so of course Cotton disappears and a monkey appears in short order. This wasn't the highlight of the series.

I heard that connecting watermelons with African-Americans is racist, but I'm not sure how.Oh and "A Lad an a Lamp" also sees Spanky knock Cotton down on the ground. He s :'(tarts to cry just before it fades.

Yeah, black people liking watermelon and fried chicken is a stereotype. However, it was innocent and totally went over my head the first time I heard it. I mean, the other kids liked watermelon just as much as Stymie did.
